Hebron State Fish Hatchery Sign

On June 11 the summer REU students visited the Ohio Division of Wildlife Inland Fisheries Research Unit (IFRE). The students and their advisors, Lindsey Bruckerhoff and Casey Pennock, enjoyed a presentation on the methods employed by IFRE staff to age otoliths and to maintain accurate and precise readings across different analysts. They also toured the fish hatchery facilities and participated in a fish dissection skill building session. The students dissected fish to extract otoliths and then watched as DOW staff demonstrated how otoliths are further prepared for aging and aged.
