Types of Jobs in Fisheries Science
Entry Level Positions
These generally require an undergraduate degree and often involve a lot of field work, laboratory sample processing, and/or data entry. Some examples of an entry level fishery science position are:
Creel Clerk, Fisheries or Hatchery Technician, and Fisheries Observer.
Mid-Level Positions
These require at least a master's degree, or sometimes an undergraduate degree paired with a fair amount of experience. Mid-level positions tend to require less tedious sample processing, but may also mean less time in the field. Some examples include:
Conservation Officer and Fishery Biologist.
Management Positions
These tend to require at least a master’s degree, with the need for a Ph.D. becoming more common for supervisor and manager positions. Management positions may have similar responsibilities to mid-level positions, but with more time spent on administrative tasks. Some examples include:
Fisheries Manager, Hatchery Supervisor, and Research Administrator.
Education and Academic Positions
These require at least a master’s degree, with the need for a Ph.D. becoming more common for supervisor and manager positions. Some examples of these positions include:
Science Communicator and University Professor/Researcher.
