The Aquatic Ecology Computer Laboratory

The AEL computer laboratory is designed to be a place where science “gets done”. Workstations are flexibly arranged to allow privacy for focused work, while being sufficiently open to facilitate mentoring and collaboration among students. The computer lab is state-of-the-art. A Local Area Network (LAN) connects 13 workstations, 5 image and sample analysis computers (including a dedicated Image-Pro Plus system), 4 laptops, a domain control \ file server and a backup domain control server, 2 networked laser printers (one color), scanner, and label maker. An LCD projector is available for presentations and lab meetings. Our primary server has dual processors and incorporates a redundant-array-of-interchangeable-drives (RAID), which protects against slow downs across the LAN and loss of data. The RAID architecture manages two hard drives as mirror images of one another. This technology simultaneously spreads data requests over the two processors and the mirrored drives, thus increasing speed and access. Further, losing data due to a hard drive failure is markedly reduced, given that both drives are exact copies of one another. Our workstations and laptops run Windows XP and use the most recent versions of popular computer applications, such as SAS, Minitab, Jump, SigmaPlot, Fish Bioenergetics, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio, EndNote, Adobe, and BEAST Professional, and the image and sample analysis applications Image-Pro Plus, SigmaScan Pro, and ArcGIS suite software.

We recently upgraded to fibre optic connections
and added a new router.
